...the lockout pin wasn't stuck, it was just out of adjustment. Takes less than an hour to fix (on an '89 anyway), but is a bit messy with lots of grease.
If you find your pin isn't stuck after removing it using kooch's instructions, do this:
Next, note that there's a cotter pin at the bottom of the shifter that goes right through the shifter shaft. This pin holds the lockout pin in place. Pull it out with a pair of pliers. Now, turn the lockout pin, which is threaded, counterclockwise so that it sticks out further. Give it 2 or 3 full turns, then refit the cotter pin and put the shifter back together.
Ignore subsequent posts here that mention a Bentley spec that the pin should protrude from bottom of shifter 22.## mm - this measurement works only in a perfect world, i.e., brand new shifter. Your shifter mechanism is wearing out a bit so you need more length than that. If you still have the problem after re-fitting, take it out again and back it out a bit more.
Toughest part of the job is getting the cotter pin back in - takes some patience...
I've had to lengthen mine twice in the past couple years.
