This happened on my first Saab. There are 2 or 3 wires that supply power to the starter. One of them on mine... the nut holding the wire had come loose and it wsant getting any electricity. I would definitely start there and its pretty easy for a novice to check, just make sure you disconnect the negative terminal of the battery first so you dont get shocked. The starter is kinda buried under a mass of wires and tubes, but it is accessable with some effort. You may have to reach your arm under the drivers side of the intake manifold to get your fingers down in there. It probably isnt even finger tight anymore so you could tighten it with your fingers first to see if this yields any success.
