Rough rider -- warmup problems?

My dad's 87 900S has been doing something very weird for a while now and finally he's gotten tired of it and is trying to fix it!
The issues: the car will normally run well at normal operating temperature--but getting to that temp makes for an arduous few minutes of driving. While cool, regardless of winter/summer conditions, the car runs very rough. The idle wanders a little bit (although its not extrememly noticeable) and when you try to put load on the engine (i.e. start moving), the car balks, stutters, and jerks along. Then, after about 5 or 10 minutes of this extremely poor performance (and believe me, the car is very hard to drive for everyone but my dad, who's used to it), suddenly the car must hit that magic temperature and starts running fine--no more hesitation, jerking, etc.
Now, if the car is shut off after reaching operating temperature and you are gone for only five minutes, the car will start and run fine. But if you're gone for 15 or 20 minutes, lo and behold, the jerking and hesitation are back. For the next 5 minutes or so, you go through crappy driving. It's like the car is running too lean!
Now, my dad talked with a trustworthy mechanic and he suggested replacing the car's computer--he lent us a used one over the weekend to see if that would solve anything. It didn't. He also suggested that the air mass meter might be bad, but he didn't have any used ones right at his fingertips, so my dad's going back today to see if he found anything.
Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this and have some tips?
Thanks in advance.
Tim B.
