The pulley has a rubber center piece and this deteriorates with time. Certainly your '85 is due if it is still the original. The repair involves one special tool (a ground down 30 mm socket, I think) because the main nut is hard to get at. You also have to block up the flywheel. If you feel up to that then the repair is certainly doable and you can save about $400 in labor (the pulley is about $140). Replace the oil pump seal and crankshaft seal at the same time and check for other oil leaks which may have caused the problem by allowing oil to get on the rubber and accelerating the wear.
