Using a multitester on O2 sensor

I went out and got a digital multitester today - want to use it on my O2 sensor. (Background - I have CE light, codes say either lean - no way - or O2 sensor preheater circuit).
It's a GB - the digital kind with red, black test probes. I followed its and Bentley's directions and tried to test the O2 sensor, both black wire and white wires as per Bentley.
I got no readings at all - stayed at 0.00. I am not sure if I am using it right or not - I had it set to the 20 volt setting (per the directions that came with it) and grounded one probe and stuck the red one into the female spade on the black O2 sensor wire - got no reading - tried same deal on the white wire connection.
Two conclusions - either I am using the tester wrong or my new Bosch generic O2 sensor is not working.
Can anyone give me directions in excruciating detail on how to do this right?
Thanks,
SDBWORKS
