First make sure the meter is working and get a little familiar with it. The black lead shoud be plugged in to the COM or - or NEG (depending on meter). The red should go to VOLT/OHM or POS. They may be color coded. Put the meter on the 20 Volt DC and check the battery just to make sure the meter is working. To check the heater supply to the O2 sensor, disconect the sensor from the wire harness. with the car running you should read around 12 VDC BETWEEN the 2 white wire into the car wire harness (not to ground). The pin that would go to the black wire should read 0.5 volts (+- 0.05) TO GROUND. To test the sensor, with the car off, use the OHM setting and check for something like 4 to 10 ohms across the white sensor wires (heater circuit) If all is OK so far, hook it back up and run the car for a couple minuites to get the sensor up to operating temp. Disconnect the connector, and with the car running you should see a voltage between .2 and .8 From the black sensor wire TO GROUND. this tells you the sensor is basically working. Hook the connector back up, and pry back the cover on the black wire connection. Measure from here (positive) to ground. If the voltage is now staying low (below .2 volts) or high (above .8) this would indicate some other problem beside the O2 sensor is causing the mixture out of limit.
