OK...you can 'back-probe' either end of the connector..the side that is connected to the car, or the side that is connected to the 02 sensor....AS LONG as the connector is still connected. IF you disconnect the connector, THEN you will have to test the connector side that is still connected to the car. The trade off is that its easier to use 'normal' test leads to do this the second way, wheareas to 'back-probe' you need long thin tips (to reach into the wire side of the connector, past the seals...) In either case, you should register Battery voltage.
As an aside, what kind of multi-meter do you have? I'm assuming that you have a digital multi-meter (DMM). If you don't have a DMM, than you shouldn't be checking the 02 signal wire (the black one...on the sensor side)
