My '89 900T has a chain; cruise control is not fly by wire on these cars. The chain looks like a pull-switch on a light fixture in your house, only the little steel balls are perhaps a bit bigger. It should pass right by your heater control valve. There should be very little slack in it, however, you don't want it too tight or it will prevent the throttle from closing fully. If it's just about loose enough, you can adjust the throttle cable a bit to compensate, just as you would on a bicycle brake.
