>>RS sez: ***Don't remove any of the shims and keep the shims on the same side from which they came off!*** These shims maintain the alignment of the pinion gear and the ring gear and require out-of-the-car work to get the proper alignment between the two gears if they're disturbed. >>
If you are talking about the shims on the carriers (6 bolts holding carrier to diff. case) then I have saved and marked them for side.
>>Are the roller bearings you are talking about the ones that hold the differential?>>
When you pull the carrier and the inner tripod joint (companion flange) there is a ball bearing and a seal that comes away with the assembly. There is also the outer race of a roller bearing; the rollers and inner race stay inside with the diff.
Since the roller on the passenger side is *very* badly worn, I'm wondering if the roller bearing might be bad too.
What I wanted to know in the original quesion is whether these can be replaced from outside... looks like a puller might fit in there. But, if that roller bearing is replaced, then the preload (shims) might need to be changed. OTH, if there is bearing wear and the bearing can't be changed, is there any way to adjust the preload without pulling the whole rig?
Make sense?
I'll ask a different question that gets to the same point, I think... I've replaced the ball bearings; do the rollers need attention, too?
