As you point out, your car has been economical to maintain per year. You state it is otherwise healthy/sound and you like the car. If the prime sticking point is "Should I expect to rebuild the trans ea 100k", as opposed to "I can not afford to rebuild it ever", then you should be set at ease; manual trans in the naturally aspirated 900S *should* last you more than a 100k (in turbos, all bets are off/more variability). I had one die rapidly at 137k, one at 157k will need a rebuild soon - it jumps out of 2nd on decel, and one at 188k that is just fine still today. I don't have any auto trans experience, if you have one of those.

The question on 900 trans longevity has been debated here before and I more/less agree w/ consensus based soley on experience (am not a mechanic) that 150k is a reasonable mean value. As both you and I have already experienced, your individual trans may go less, may go far longer (someone on TSN claimed to have a highway commuter w/ 400k on orig trans - yikes). There remains some risk, and it's not a remote risk, of early failure; you will have to determine whether you can accept that risk (which I guess is what you're asking and that's the best I can do so I'll just shut up ;o)

Also, taken as a whole, ask whether you are better off selling this Saab and starting over with another car - i.e. will you incur less risk/expense over time? My 900S had me at wits end with expenses in '98-'99, was tempted to sell it, but realized in my particular case that I was better off financially to stick it out and end up with a solid car of known history, that I also really enjoyed.

Good luck,
'85 900S 188k
