>>Also, taken as a whole, ask whether you are better off selling this Saab and starting over with another car - i.e. will you incur less risk/expense over time?

I think this is the KEY point. In the past few years I've sold my '99 9-3 ($500 per month payment), bought a '93 900S (relatively cheap), and just recently bought a '85 900T (good deal I couldn't pass up). So I plan on selling my '93 900, and just drive the '85 Turbo (and my '69 Sonett occasionally). The point is, that I continually seem to be DECREASING my car expenses by driving OLDER cars (SAABs), not NEWER ones.

Think about it this way: Say, once every 5 years, something MAJOR happens and I have to replace something like the tranny (for say $2500). That MAJOR expense amounts to only 5 months of 9-3 payments. The cost of a 9-3 (unless you buy it outright) will be around $40,000 (with interest). That's alot of TRANNY REBUILDS!!!!Also, personally, I like the design, handling, and karma I get from driving my older 900S.

So, I like to think of occasional repair costs as a much better and cheaper alternative to car payments. No matter what you buy, you're gonna be spending >$300 per month just to pay the bank. Not to mention, when you FINALLY DO pay the car off, it'll be about time for IT'S tranny to be rebuilt!!!!
