The current required to start the car is generally much more than the small wire going to the cigarette lighter can handle. You'll note that real jumper cables use pretty heavy wire, and they do so for very good reasons. Going through the cigarette lighter doesn't remove the requirement to carry lots of current. I'd throw that phony jumper cable gizmo in the trash.
As for your car, you probably either blew a fuse or fried the wire between the cigarette lighter and the battery or ground. Did you smell anything burning/hot in your car?
As for you wife's car, you'll need to figure out why the battery was dead:
left a light on, worn alternator brushes, broken wire to alternator, bad battery, etc.
If you take the battery to a parts store, they can probably test it for you in a few minutes. If it doesn't test OK or if it is over about 5 years old, replace it.
