I could use some help thinking this through. For the past several weeks, I've noticed a bit of a surging at full throttle, even though the boost is pegged on the red. Over the past couple of days, I've felt a slight miss under acceleration. Tonight, on the freeway, it began running rougher and rougher until it wouldn't run at all. Even with it floored, the boost would still swing up into the red. It finally died and I had it towed the rest of the way home.
I ran a test on the fuel pump, jumping across two terminals in the fuse box, per the Bentley manual. I heard a whirring noise from the pump, but previous posters on here have said that may not be indicative that the pump is actually working. I'm inclined to believe it is the pump that has failed. If it is a failed relay, it wouldn't gradually fade away like this, would it? Clogged filters don't usually fail that quickly and to the point where the car will not start, do they? Another possibility could be the AMM? My car has a slight idle hunt when cold, but nothing severe.
The car has 275,000 miles and to my knowledge, this is the original fuel pump. Any comments? Thanks.
Regards,
Dan
