So in the new used '91 900 I just bought, I'm still discovering the things that don't work. Currently, I'm interested in getting the interior lights working and figuring out why there's no heat...

First, the lights--none of the lights in the dash that are NOT the instrument panel work (ie. the lights in the heat, fan speed, airflow, power window switches, dome lights over dash and on the roof don't work). Not only do the overhead lights not work when I open the door, but when I turned the light rocker switch on the console back and forth still brings forth no light. I checked the bulb in the dome light and it looks fine. The only lights on the buttons, etc. that work are for the A/C, Hazard, and Recirc. However, these lights only work when you turn them ON--they're normally supposed to have dimmer lights running so you can locate them. So I know those are at least getting power.

The instrument panel lights up and the headlights work fine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be bad? I'm hoping that I'm missing a ground somewhere or that there's a common (easy) fix...

Second, the car produces almost no heat. There's enough to feel the difference in very cold weather, but not enough to warm you. It's not quite enough to defrost the car. There is no water on the passenger side floor and there is no smell of anti-freeze on the inside, so this leads me to think that the heater core is not bad. There might be a little smell of antifreeze when you stand outside of the car near the front--my dad hypothesizes that this could mean a new radiator or radiator core is needed. Could this affect the car's cabin-heating capacity? It seems that the heater core just isn't getting any warmth... but I'm not sure, really. Any input would help greatly.

Right now, the heat's the most important--makes it difficult to drive in this cold New England weather!

TIA,

Tim B.
