Definitely replace the belts if they are worn. Remember, those belts that are turning your alt also cool your engine. You may be able to drive with the bat not charging, but not very far if the belts break and your temp shoots up. Rather than dressing, that covers the problem up...shoot to FIX the PROBLEM. Check the tention of the belts they may be slipping because they are not tight enough. If the new belts are put on, and are tight, then either your voltage regulator or brushings in oyur alt. are bad/worn.
Also, you may want to look into seeing wheter your harmonic blancer (main pulley) is slipping. This causes a loud squeeling noise that some may think is the belts.
