Head off, help needed with diagnosis

I had coolant in my exhaust so I decided to undertake replacing my head gasket. I have the head off and now I'm inspecting things to try and determine the cause. The gasket itself doesn't look too bad except for the metal ring around the number 1 piston hole, it's loose and suspect that's where the coolant was getting in. The only other spot that looks like trouble is at the other end where the oil return passage is, there is black crud there and on the outside of the block at that spot.
When looking at the head itself, the top of the cylinders where the valves are have two different colors. On the top of cylinder 1 it is nice and clean, on cylinders 2-3-4 the top of the cylinder is dark. The other thing that I noticed is that on cylinder 1, the valves are all dark and on 2-3-4 the intake valves are dark and the exhaust valves have a chocolate brown color.
Not having seen the inside of an engine before, what is normal? Is cylinder 1 different because the coolant was getting in and "cleaning" the cylinder?
Also, I have the kinda chocolate milk colored oil which i gather is coolant in the oil. How does the coolant get into the oil? What should I look for while I got this baby taken apart?
Any help is welcome.
