Just giving a little update. Changed to Honda MTF last this weekend on my 91 900 NA with 151K (original trans and original trans oil). Had been doing a lot of reading on this board about the subject. Got three quarts from the local Honda dealer for $6.20 each (increase in price?). Did the recommended flush two weeks ago with 30W compressor oil and drove the 500 miles. The shifting is definitely smoother than it used to be with the old oil. It never was that bad but it still was a big improvement! Hope it will help the longevity of the trans also (have a little pinion whine on acceleration at low RPM in 4th and 5th but then goes away completely above 2000 rpm). Crossing my fingers that the MTF fixed the whine, but that's probably just wishful thinking. Did not notice the whine this morning but I will have to drive it a little longer to see if it really made a difference.
Until recently, I had been anticipating to get the transmission rebuilt at 150k, just because of Saab's reputation for this part. After many discussions with my mechanic, have decided to hold off for the moment and keep an eye on things. When I took the differential cover off, did not find any metal parts. Just some very minor shavings and the magnet had a little goop on it. Really not bad for 11 years.
