it may be (just maybe) alt. bearings going bad and/or brushes worn out. That 12.3 volts you measured, was that with the motor running? If so, it should be higher, say around 13.8 volts, if I remember correctly. 12.3 volts is probably fine if the motor is not running when voltage checked.
That said, try putting a finger (carefully) on the alternator while the engine is running to check for unusual vibration. Use the other hand to blip the throttle open there at the throttle body to see if noise/vibration (if at alt.) stops as engine RPMs change. Again, this is just my best guess. Hope it helps! (And an alt. is not as bad as crank bearings!)
Please post back w/findings (and age and model type of your 900)...
