This is only a guess about debadging in the USA. Maybe because the SPG is debadged the idea is to make a non-SPG look a little bit more like the a SPG. The cool factor to the SPG debadging (to me, anyway) is that it's a sleeper.
I personally plan to debadge my convertible just to give it a cleaner look.
In europe I've seen TONS of debadged BMW's, Benzo's, etc. It think it gives the car a cleaner look, but I'm guessing the real reason they do it is to buy the cheapest version but not show it. I.e. get the low horsepower 4 banger BMW 3 series but not show it's the cheapie. The saab in the USA is opposite, don't show you have the faster turbo model.
