The newer mirrors are held on as JohnK describes. The mirror is adhered to the retaining ring/backer with some super strong doublestick taper containing the heat matrix. I just took a donor one apart and pryed the heat element open in search of why they lose continuity. Your mirror unit won't physically fall from the car because of the wires for the heat element.
FWIW, the heat element fails due to slight tears (and discoloration?) where the thin film type matrix attaches to the prongs for the wire connectors.
