After reading your post(s), I think my Mom's '90 900 has the same problem. I took out the shifter housing to remove a fragment of a broken key from her ignition lock over the weekend. That went okay, but when I put it back together, it didn't want to shift into 1st or 2nd gears! I took off the rubber shift boot and realized the 3 Torx screws holding the shifter into the shifter housing weren't tight. I tightened them, and then 1st shift better--not great--and 2nd is a little stubborn and now there's no 5th!
The reason I'm posting is that Townsend's page mentions that the 9000s (I know, we're talking 900s here) have a rubber shift coupling, too, which can separate and cause problems. Here's an excerpt from his shifter adjustment page:
"Watch the coupling as someone moves the shifter from the 1-2 gate to the 5-R gate. if the coupling has a problem, you will see the shaft from inside the car turn more than the shaft going into the tranny. You may be able to see the coupling separate. These rubber bits often break between the two metal pieces and the rubber. Result is a sudden inability to get either 1&2 or 5&R as the coupling separates instead of turning the tranny shift shaft. These rubber bits are available separately. A good emergency fix is to use two common hose clamps around each end of the coupling clamping the shafts together."
I don't know if the hose clamp fix will work on the 900s, but hey, it sounds cheap (and even better, available!) so I'm gonna crawl under Mom's '90 and see if it'll work (soon).
Hope this helps!
