Tom,
Well of course you're about to be broke, you're driving a Saab :^)
Couple things come to mind.
First, the stack height is CRITICAL. It defines the alignment betweeen all the driving and driven gears. If it's off by far enough, gears could hit the adjacent ones, which could easily cause breakage. And, it needs to reset when the pinion bearings are replaced - you can't just stuff the old shims back in and expect it to be right.
Second, if the third "gear" has been repeatedly replaced (as opposed to the cluster gear), perhaps the cluster gear has a problem that's damaging the gears it meshes with - worth checking out.
Third, if pinion bearings are the only problem found, either the person doing the work is a bit clueless or not very observant, or you are really really lucky. Typically when you take apart a tranny with > 100K miles, you're going to find cluster gear shaft wear, worn synchro rings, worn shift forks, and various other things depending on the particular unit.
Assuming it's the same person that's fixed the transmission before, I'd think long and hard about having someone else take care of it, and be prepared to replace a lot of parts. Or if you have the $$, a better option is to get a rebuilt unit from an outfit that does them all the time and has a good reputation - Eriksson Industries in CT (http://www.erikssonindustries.com/) is considered by many including myself to be the best.
