Heater Control Valve R&R advice

Can anyone give me some advice on replacing the heater control valve? I've read the FAQ on here, read the stuff in the Bentley manual. I've got a consistent leak into the driver's side pedal area on a 1991 900S with 89k on it. I've read about the two different ways of going in-- removing knee bolster or going in through the speaker. If i'm a newbie DIY'er, what would you all recommend? What tools are particularly important to have? Should I go OEM or aftermarket replacement valve? I'm going to have a friend who's got more experience with car repair (but not saab) help me out. will definitely have the FAQ from here with me...anything else?
