I did this on my 80 by removing the knee bolster, but then I already had it off for some other wiring issues. Found it was very easy to remove the heater core (4-5 screws as I remember) along with the valve. This enabled me to take it inside (did during the winter here in MN) to take it apart and put the new one on. Make sure you get the rubber o-rings set right when you put the valve back on the heater core. Only issue I had reinstalling was I forgot to connect the stem from the valve to the heater switch.
