A grand for a cat????.....$600 for shocks??????......$600 for axles?????..
What state are you in? I find it hard to believe that bad shocks would fail an inspection where as you couldn't register the car. And even if that was the case, all four shocks(kyb's) can be bought at The Saabsite.com for under $140. A new cat from them is $115(high quality Bosal) and chances are better than not that only one axle needs replaced to cure the clicking noise($80 for an outer joint from the same place)....That only adds up to $335 in parts plus shipping. 10 hrs labor at $50/hr still keeps the cost under $1000 for all the work. If you want to invest $2200 from your "honest" mechanic, then do it. Almost every part that was mentioned is DIY except for maybe the exhaust work(I hate lying on my back doing exhaust work). Buy a set of tools and do the work yourself. For what you'll pay for the tools is still cheaper than giving the money to the "honest" mechanic. Grease under the fingernails eventually washes out.
