Your sitch is what scares people off of Saabs, and that's a shame. Is your mechanic a Saab tech, or just a dabbler?
1. 115,000 mi is middle age AT WORST if the car is otherwise as you say (solid body & you like the car). And those repairs are nothin'.
2. Totally echo what's said by everyone else; post your location and get some recommendations for another Saab tech. Speak w the new tech. Be up front w him, tell'em you've gotta save some money. Maybe he'll agree to put in stuff (or just some) you buy from reputable parts shops like Sobstory/Trollhatten/etc.
3. Spend $45 and get the Bentley manual & keep reading Saabnet. Buy some tools. Keep a binder of good posts that you can refer to when needed (ie common problems or probs you already have). The peace of mind and newfound ability will reap huge rewards down the road. And good stories :p
4. A 16yo Saab C900 is a helluva lot nicer than a 16yo practically-anything.
Good luck,
'85 900S 191k (no doubt, will keep even when buy new in ~2 years)
