Definatley DO NOT get an old 900. They can be both time consuming and money pits. That being said....I own two classic 900's. A turbo convertible and a 1990 S....And for the price of both of them combined and the money I've put in to them...it adds up to about the cost of ONE nicer new car that I would consider driving. Not a bad deal. But...I also put alot of my time into them but...that's only because I want to.
It's all in how you look at it with an old 900. If you don't mind the occasional expense at the garage and some of your personal time invested in the car then they make a nice, fairly reliable car. Both of mine are daily drivers(fiancee' drives the convertible). I've taken long road trips in both of them with no problems and would do it again.
But...I think Pat is right when he says a newer 900 is more reliable overall but...they are also more complicated. Meaning if your inclined to work on your own car then your going to run into spots when you need a special tool or something like that. An old 900 is overall pretty simple and easy to figure out.
So...an old 900 SPG is a fun car that you'll love but end up spending some $$ depending on how it's been treated. It sounds like a newer 900 would be a better choice for you given your needs but....you'll miss out on owning one of the coolest cars ever produced.
