Saab ownership is very much hit or miss. The car you end up with depends mostly on who you're buying it from, and since the newest SPG is a decade old that can male a huge amount of difference.

I've owned a LOT of Saabs. About 20 of them. I still have many of 'em. Some, like my '88 900T, were money pits, with something new and expensive breaking about once a month. I shudder to think of what I put into that car and summarily refuse to ever look at the receipts ever again. OTOH, my '86 900S has been nothing but a joy. Nothing has ever gone wrong with that car no matter how much I abuse it so long as I clean up after myself. I've put almost 40,000 hard miles on it in two years and it's never even hiccuped. The difference? The '88 T was owned by a guy whose idea of "maintenance" meant a tuneup at the local Exxon station and the '86 S was owned by a fellow who took it to the dealer or a specialized independent for each every service.

With an SPG, you're opening up a can of worms. SPGs seem to be the "affordable exotic" in the eyes of a lot of people - an unusual and fast car that's cheap enough to utterly disrespect. I've *never* bought an SPG from someone who treated it well, regularly serviced it, or even made an attempt to keep it in tip-top shape - and I've purchased six of them. All of them have been driven hard it seems, and that takes its toll on the cars life.

OTOH, the newer 900s are at *most* eight years old, and many of them leases - and that means dealer maintenance. They were expensive new and most people treated them well - most of them haven't hit their second, third, or fourth owners yet and that by and large means they've been cared for. You'll still find a rotten apple here or there, but on the whole I'd personally feel a lot more comfortable buying a NG900 than an old c900 - unless I was *expecting* or *desiring* some time under the hood (which is always the case.... :).

By and large, NG900s will be more reliable, quieter, and generall more refined. They generally won't handle as wel (no matter what you do) or be as much fun to drive, but they are also capable of ultimately going much faster, getting better fuel economy, and remaining squeak and rattle free for a long time.

So figure out what you want. They may both be "Saab 900s" but they are fundementally different cars with truly different design goals.
