If you only wanted to shorten the height of the shifter all you had to do was gut the rod assembly and cut from the bottom how much you wanted to shorten it. Then drill two holes up that distance to relocate the linkage ball and pivot ball. The reverse wire would then need to be cut from the top and then bent to for the reverse sleeve. This method needs no dremel, you retain the reverse sleeve retaining ring, and you retain the machining for the shifter knob.
I'm only a couple of days away from finishing my DIY Short Throw shifter webpage on my website. I just met w/ Fish the other day and I was able to confirm the pivot ball assembly type. So the method will work for the older types in addition. The DIY project does not shorten the height of the shifter buy dramatically shortens the throw and increases the stiffness of the throw. Fish got to try it out, so maybe if he's out there reading, he'll reply.
Fish and I were shooting the shit at some bar the other night and we got on the topic of shifter height and stated that he liked his shifter a little lower. Me personally I like it the OEM height, but I thought of a method to add to the DIY so the owner can adjust the height. So this DIY page will show you how to heighten the pivot point to make a short throw shifter that also can also be adjust by height to fine tune.
