early solid rotor capability Posted by Kevin K [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: solid to vented brake system retrofit (long), MS, Thu, 23 May 2002 02:57:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
always nice to upgrade, but keep in mind the old solid rotors have a lot of stopping capacity, and u likely had some caliper/pad malady. The vented rotors are same dia, which largely dictates normal stopping power. If comming down quick from 120 mph, or doing track events, the vented rotors are a definite +.
With healthy calipers and solid rotors, and metal-master pads, I have no indication of fade (loss of friction) or overheating fluid (lose pedal pressure) with my 83T in a range of street usage.
Porterfield R4S will be even better, and low dust. Slotted rotors will wear pads quicker, but tend to keep pad surface in better shape. Remove the splash/dust shield for better cooling, and keep front rotors near max thickness.
Just letting others know the old solids, set up right, will do well for most street use.
front rotor dia/thickness, mm:
280/12.8 early solid 900 rotors (front e-brake)
280/20.0 86/7 vented 900 (front e-brake)
280/23.5 M88+ C900, M87-88 9K NA
280/25.0 M90-97 9KT
