Jim,
Thanks for more info. I'm a little confused though. I was thinking that when crankshaft accelerates to higher RPM, there must be a torque on the crankshaft. In order for the HB and belts to accelerate with the crankshaft to higher RPM, that torque must be transmitted to HB and belts, respectively. This transfer of torque from crankshaft to HB would seem to me to be the best opportunity for the HB to slip, if it was going to. Would you agree with that?
Now that I think about it a bit more, I see you're right re: the clutch. The clutch/pressure plate/etc transfer the torque from the crankshaft to the tranny, and then to the wheels. So if you need torque at the wheels (as in on a hill), then you need more transfer of torque from crankshaft to wheels, via clutch/tranny. Screeching in this condition would imply something awry with the transfer of torque from crankshaft to wheels, either in clutch or tranny, correct?
Ok, so if it was HB or belts making noise, I should be able to sit there in neutral, rev the engine, and make the noise, right? Because the crankshaft is gonna do what it's gonna do on the front end by the belts, regardless of what's going on on the rear end at the clutch. The only thing that can change at the front end is the RPM of the crankshaft, or rate of change of that RPM....and that should be exclusively dependent on revving the throttle, which I can do in neutral without involving the clutch.
Do I finally have all this right? (amazing how completely useless an engineering education is to solving these types of problems...bah, maybe I just didn't think about it enough) I'm still confused because if indeed I was successful in stopping the noise via tightening the A/C belt, none of this makes any sense.
I tried to apply brakes, slip clutch, and generate the noise while sitting still, but was unsuccessful. Only got clunkity-clunkity clunk as if about to stall out. I went to the grocery store and on the way had to stop (on hill) going out of parking garage for crossing pedestrians. Revved engine to about 4500 and slipped clutch big time (enough that I smelled burning clutch) to get going off the hill, and couldn't generate the noise.
Thanks again for the advice...sorry for my newbie confusion.
