Ok, so I may not have to do my HB after all (yet)... here's the deal with the clutch.

I have noticed some noise in the past (low rumble) with clutch engaged (pedal out) which disappears when clutch disengaged. Posted that about a year ago here, and conclusion was t/o bearing, but probably not big enough problem to be concerned with just yet.

The squeal currently in question sounds exactly like belt squeal to me... not exactly what I would call "metallic squeal"... I can't hear it whatsoever idling, clutch in or out. In fact, couldn't hear it at all under any conditions today...but in the past, I hear it whan clutch gets engaged more slowly than usual (I call this slipping the clutch, maybe I'm using the wrong term).. In my experience this happens taking off on hills, or sometimes accelerating slowly from a stop sign. I've heard it more in the morning after I first start the car...that's why I was thinking belts, because of the alt. load. Have seemingly quieted it a couple times now by adjusting the A/C belt. However, as I mentioned in recent post, I've never been able to generate the noise in neutral just by revving engine, and I've never heard it at startup (generally in neutral at startup)... so this seems to suggest maybe it's not the belts.

I've never heard of clutches squealing...but a search here yielded some hits for clutch squeal related to pilot bearing. Maybe that's the deal... so bad news is even if I don't have to do the HB, looks like a clutch job instead...man, can't win.
