If there's fuel in the rail, it starts..momentarily

if I jump the fuse and run the pump for a few seconds, it will start up, then immediately die. On successive attempts, it will start up for shorter periods of time.
I'm all but certain that Jim is right, and this has something to do with tach signal. Bentley doesn't tell me a whole lot about this tach signal or how to check it. I've inspected the ground points on the engine lifting lug (where fuel injection grounds are supposed to live)...they look ok.. The ground points down by the rad drain look ok too... but again, there could be a broken wire there I can't see.
When the car momentarily starts, the tach comes to life. But when cranking, it sits there dead. Does this offer any clues?
Where is the ground for this tach signal? I'm looking at schematic for EZK ignition in Bentley (371-89)... is it location 201? 93?
Is there any way to check this tach signal stuff w/o accessing the LH ECU? It's not exactly easy to get to under the passenger side carpet (I tried), but it looks like the whole underside of the dash would have to come out to peel the carpet back.
Thanks again folks.
