Using the input shaft to lock thr trans sounds good on paper but in practice you run a good risk of pulling the upper primary sproket off the casting(From experience).
To lock in R and 3 slip a punch into the hole where the tapered pin fits in the selector shaft and feel for the gates of the trans by rocking the shaft and pushing forward on it. You will have to push fairly hard to get it in and out of gear. the center gate with the shaft pushed in is third gear. get it into third and unscrew the 10mm(head) bolt that retains the little lever in the rearmost side cover(that is reverse) the gear tht slides back and forth is the revers slider just slide it back until it engages the gears and you are locked up.
Or do what I do and use an impact gun.
