Fred

just another thought:
If you did indeed dump lots of coolant into the exhaust system before you took things apart and have not run the engine long/hot enough to burn it out of the system the engine will smoke quite badly.

On the distributor/timing, you should see the timing mark if all is correct. The distributor install is really straight forward and can only be correct or 180deg out. Check to see the the plug wires are installed correctly by locating the timing mark in the window by bumping the engine over with the coil wire removed. Given the timing mark is located in the timing window the rotor should on the #1 cylinder or very close to it (or 180out rotate crank one more rev). This should be the #1 wire and follow the firing order and rotor rotation to check the other wires.

If the timing is not correct and or plug wires are swapped the engine will not run correct or get hot enough to burn the coolant out of the exhaust system.

Coolant is heavier then oil and will settle to the bottom of the oil pan overnight. It will not stay on top of the oil. If you remove the drain plug coolant will drain out first. Ask me how I know... I was not a happy camper. The oil/coolant slurry will froth up and remain on top as it holds lots of air.

The other way to get coolant into the exhaust is to have a cracked coolant passage inside the exhaust port. When the valve is closed coolant will pool up. When the valve opens the exhaust gas will blow the coolant out into the manifold and exhaust system. This is exactly what happened to my 80' 8v 900T and ended up replacing the head. The car would run fine until hot and then steam city. It ran perfect after the new/used head was installed showing how Saab have hardy engines.

Good luck Fred.
