Took out the thermostat? Do you mean you left it out & it still overheats with and empty thermostat housing? I'm not sure about this, but I think if the T/S housing is empty, the easiest path for the coolant is back thru the pump & engine. When the T/S gets hot it blocks that path & sends coolant to the radiator. Running with an empty T/S housing might be worse. You may be able to block it open & put it back in? Cut the big spring so BOTH disks move down?
Anyway, if you are sure that the thermostat is NOT stuck closed, I can't think of anything BUT the radiator. Maybe after being taken out & 'exercised', the T/S might start working for a while?
Flush & fill might work, but it sounds like its more than "slightly" clogged. I guess it wouldn't hurt... It actually sounds like a stuck T/S since it came on suddenly.
