Obviously R134a is a LOT cheaper than R12 but if they told you you need a new hose then it was most likely because it was leaking. The system should be completely sealed and not need to be charged up. If your hose is leaking then you will need to be charging often. The bigest problem with changing the refrigerant over is knowing how much to put in. The Spec amount of R12 is NOT the same for R134a. If you put in the same amount pressures may get too high. By LAW a shop has to install a high pressure cutout switch when doing an R134a conversion. Also suction can be applied to both the low and high side. Always charge on low side, high side hooked up only for monitoring pressures when charging. Some newer cars don't even have a provision for hooking up a high side gauge.
