I too think suspecting the compressor as the possible weak link in the C900 AC chain is sound. My decision to retrofit to R134A in the first place was because I had to replace my dying compressor. But what puzzles me about the R12 to R134A conversion debate are the wide ranging reports of success and non-success. It either blows cold or it doesn't. In my case, I got cold air. And it's really quite hot here at times where I live.

My overall AC system, parts assembled from various 80's decade donor cars, is quite old. What I did do, and what may be the critical factor, is purge the entire system - compressor, condensor, evaporator, hoses - of the old oil prior to the retrofit. Even if you don't think there's oil inside the condensor and evaporator, there is! What, with all those tubes and channels turning this way and that! All one needs to do is pour some mineral spirits or other solvent at one end, tip it this way and that a few times, then drain it and you'll see what comes out. Then blow air through each component from an air compressor and drain into a bowl or bucket. Heck, flush it once again! Then dry the system out by connecting one end of each component to a shop vac and draw air through for a good 30 minutes to evaporate the remaining solvent and moisture from the compressed air. Of course to do all that you have to disassemble the entire system. In other words, simply purging the old R12 and charging up with R134A contents is the least effective retrofit. The right way is the more time consuming way. The last thing I did before drawing the final vacuum before filling up with oil and R134a is dried the entire system out one more time by sucking mid-day sunshine warm dry air (desert conditions where I live) through the system via shopvac hose attachment. If I didn't do it exactly according to spec, all I know is I have cold air.
