plug gap is distance spark travels. the shorter the gap, the quicker the spark. longer, slower. quicker means timing occurs slightly earlier (advance), the opposite for longer (timing retard). i'm not talking about a few degrees here, but it will change. someone told me this before and i was leary until i tried it. set initial timing and then changed the gap. checked timing again and it was slightly off. this also explains the comment some make when they say that the felt more power when they closed the plug gap. advanced the timing a bit and increased the power. doesn't take much, you can feel a difference with only 1 degree. give it a shot if you like.
also at play, the size the the gap and shape of the electrode impact the spark intensity. so with a wider gap, you may retard the timing and decrease the intensity, and lose power. the opposite for closing the gap.
i'm no expert in this area, just talking about my experiences, so keep that in mind. hope this helps.
