I believe you said that you replaced the thermostat in your daughters car already with an 82 deg C. I live in FL and have an 88 900 S also. You'll probably want to find a new thermal switch that plugs in to the radiator. Call Jim at Saabstory I believe it was about $10, 82 deg C variant. If her car doesn't have one of the new yellow expansion tank caps, you'll wanna get one of those too, available from Saabstory or eeuroparts.com
I have had a false "hot" reading before, something to do with resistance between the plugs for the gauge cluster. You can access the wiring harness through the speaker cover on the driver side. It's the large white plastic plug on the right, pull it out, spray it down with some QD eletronic cleaner. Anyway, my car usually runs about 40% on the temp gauge in the summmer while drving around, in traffic gauge will make it's way up to 60%, fans kick on and back to about 50%. As for the A/C I had a stroke of bad luck about a week ago, the rear seal on the compressor finally gave way and all the freon leaked out. Check the rear seal on her A/C compressor, the Seiko-Seiki comressors are notorious for seal failures at the rear seal. Also, check on the back of the hood where it would rest over the compressor if you see a green slime there, the compressor is leaking at the rear seal. Well sorry if this message is a bit of a run on, but it's 3am here. uggh.

Vince
