Engine swap time

This venerable 82 900T sedan with over 200K miles may be at the end of this engine's life. This weekend I took a lengthy drive up the coast. The following morning after returning I started the car and noticed some fairly heavy blu/white smoke from the tailpipe and the smell of burning oil. The smoke went away once the engine warmed up. I checked the oil level some time after and noted how far the level had dropped since before the trip. Clearly I've got some compression rings in need of replacement. Could even be the valve guides, but I think it's the rings. Either way I've got a big job ahead of me.
This leaves me with several options, money not necessarily an issue whichever option I choose. I can keep this engine and just give it a good overhaul, with new bearings throughout, a copper head gasket, the larger pinion bearing, perhaps even throw in a rebuilt tranny.
Another option is to obtain a good 2 liter N/A block and head with few(er) miles and convert it to turbo. I've been reading on this site about others doing that and I'm intrigued by the possibilities. I understand I'd need to be mindful of excessive boost with the higher compression N/A engine. Even still, the better low end performance gain, as well as a solid turbo boost appeals to me. I can also snag a 16V engine and upgrade that monster. That one certainly appeals, but would require much more effort and component replacements.
Any insights and rumunations are welcome.
