Yes, and now would be the time to fix the hardware on the back of the door panel insert...the insert is just fiberboard and probably wet/damp/damaged from water or moisture coming through the door because the last guy stripped out the plastic sealer stuff from under the door trim panel.
Take the door panel insert off and peel off the covering and wire brush by hand the sponge crap that is still sticking to the insert. I used the extra headliner material from doing my headliner (Trollhattan, Baltimore, MD sold me the kit) and 3M Super Trim Adhesive in the spray can (there is 3M Trim Adhesive too but get the Super Trim Adhesive) used as contact cement...you spray both the insert and the material, let the cement dry to tack in 10 min or so, and stick the headliner material to the insert.
Now the bad news...those #R@#Q insert panels are just fiberboard and they deteriorate no matter what you do in 15-20 years. I'm thinking of getting some zebrawood or somesuch veneer (solid is pretty expensive!) and just cutting panels using the inserts as templates, epoxying modified hardware to the back of the panel, maybe routing the back of the panel 3/32" or so to inset them, and installing wood panels. You might consider doing the wood inserts now and fixing the problem for a long time, at least until you need to polyurethane the wood panels again....
