My Corrado was repainted about 4 years ago, by the previous owner.
Nothing was removed - they just taped around all the trim, lights, etc etc. And guess what? The job looks like crap up close. From 20 feet away, the car looks great, though.
I think there are a few keys to getting a car repainted, especially if you are on a budget. First, find a good shop. Ask around - see where other peple have gotten their car painted, how happy they are, and the quality of the job. My town has a little teeny informal "classic car meet" every wednesday during the summer - it is almost all 60's and 70's muscle cars, but it is a great place to see the work of many of the local paint shops. And if you talk to people at the paint shops, ask if you can see examples of their work. Look around the shop for a few minutes, try to get a feel for the time and effort that they put into a customer's car.
You also want a shop that will work with you, not against you. For example, try to find a shop that will let you "help." Especially if you are on a budget. I don't mean that you'll help them actually paint, but if you find a place that you can work with, they'll let *you* take off all the trim, and do other misc prep work. Some shops will even let you do the trim removal and prep stuff in one of their shop bays, but be prepared to do the work at home and drive or tow the car to the shop.
This can save you a *ton* of money, since instead of paying someone for a day or two worth of work to take the trim, lights, accessories, etc off, you can do it yourself. This way, you can also keep track of the trim bits yourself, instead of leaving them to some tech at the paint shop that might break or loose something important like one of the SPG panels.
IMHO, if you are going to go through the time and expense to do a paint job, do it right. The paint job on a car is one of the most noticeable features people see - wether glancing sideways as you drive down the road, or studying your car at a show.
