Your post is a reminder of why people opt to just buy new and let the warranty service and mechanics deal with the headaches. A friend of mine recently related his desires to just bite the bullit and buy new (his excellent choice, the SAAB 9-5) because of how much money he's spent keeping his beloved but aging beemer's in running order.

About that 92 900 S - the problems you listed are normal. Having them all at once is the kicker! Truly a dream car for the experienced DIYer, but at a much lower price. Half the owner's asking price would be a good start. Here's what that owner needs to acknowledge - if he kept his car in working condition and dealt with the various issues as they arose, he'd have probably spent his current asking price on repair bills alone. So to expect any potential buyer to accept and pay for his accumulated lack of maintenance is dishonest and delusional. He should consider himself ahead were he to accept half the asking price.

The steering rack hissing sound. My experience with two SAAB's now is that they do hiss. Just the nature of the pressurised fluids passing through small openings and hoses. Ever hear a backhoe while operating? Even my new rack hisses. What I have noticed however is that if the sound insulation padding that tucks up beneath the dash, or one of the engine compartment boot seals is missing or unseated, you get a dramatic increase of engine compartment noises. Perhaps the shift rod boot is ruptured. The pronounced hissing noise could be coming from something as simple as that. A steering rack that's leaking is more a sign of trouble than hissing. Of course, I'd have to hear that car's rack. Perhaps it's hissing excessively.

The clutch pedal squeek - from your description it sounds as if the pedal itself just needs a good lubing.

Reverse grinding - that's common with many cars and trucks, including my vintage 82 900T. It's just something I've gotten used to - the shifting into 2nd before engaging reverse gear. If the solution is a new clutch shaft pilot bearing, then I'll be sure to replace it when I do my clutch.

No heat - perhaps all that's wrong is that the on/off control shaft has become disconnected from the heater valve behind the dash. A very common thing to happen when doing any dash work. It's a simple fix.

The sunroof motor - yeah, that whole system can get gummed up with stuff, or out of alignment, causing the problem you see/hear.

The antenna not rising - a new mast is in order. There's a plastic cable that connects to the inner core that causes the mast to rise and fall. A broken cable is very common. In fact, I spent yesterday at a scrap yard in search of an unbroken mast cable. I did find just one, while finding several broken. $20 for a new one and a simple install. There's a FAQ on this site detailing the proceedure.

The remaining electric problems is a matter of tracing them down one at a time. It could be something as simple as a bad fuse, or a loose or disconnected wire, or the trickier oxidation of the metal connection points. Loose, corroded or frayed ground points are a common source for a wide range of elec ills. A matter of inspecting and cleaning them all.

As a dogged DIYer myself, I would consider buying such a car with all those problems if it looked great, but at a much lower price.

Best of luck in your searching and purchasing.
