Engine running hot, but heater gets cooler!

I suspect my head gasket is on its way out, but would be interested if anyone else has had similar symptoms. The temp guage runs higher than normal and the wife was putting the blower on full with the temp controller to hot to bring it down. Now she normally just uses the car for local trips, but I drained the system and flushed it with a flushing fluid then fitted a new thermostat and it seemed okay. But today I have had to use the car for a 300 mile journey. The temp was static for 30 minutes of 65-70 mph twisties but once I got onto the dual carriage way and started to climb over the hills with the boost gauge showing half yellow and doing 80mph the temp started to rise to red. I'd had the heater on max and blower on 3 and as the temp rose the hot air out of the vents got colder until only cold air was only being blown out. I stopped after an hour and checked the cooling water level which hadn't moved at all. I then bled a load of hot air(?) out of the brass air vent on top of the thermostat casing. The water level dropped a small amount. I got going again and had nice hot air to warm me and the temp guage steadied at half way, but as I increased my speed to over 70 mph the temp started to rise and the heater air got cold again. I dont seem to have water in the oil and I dont have any oil in the water system. I suspect gases are being blown across the head gasket into the water ways only on boost.
Your comments would be appreciated.
TIA

- Perhaps a faulty new thermostat? It's possible. >, Micah in NC, Mon, 2 Sep 2002 11:36:52
