Questions about vacum leaks

I am chasing down a vacum leak that is causing my idle to fluxuate and my car to stall when it is cold. I have replacecd a couple of suspect vacum lines but I am still looking for the main culprit. I have some questions for those that have gone before me. Is the small nipple on the valve cover breather suposed to hold vacum? Is the charcoal cannister supposed to hold vacum? Mine doesn't but it isn't the cause of mt idle. I disconnected it from the throttle and the idle is still screwy. Lastly can a vacum leak behind the dash cause a bad idle. I remember hearing a pop back there a couple of weeks ago but I am hoping for an easier solution as it is a pain to dig around back there. I know the problem isn't the hooter as it still holds vacum. I guess the next suspect is the vacum cannister
