Assuming its a 5-speed, place a rag atop your head and depress the clutch pedal with head. There are vacuum lines going to a few switches and a fuel cutoff switch, perhaps more. If they seem ok just hook up a vacuum gauge to the Inlet Manifold by the brake booster, you should be pulling 16-22"Hg.
If so, move on to checking/cleaning AIC, and adjusting Idle & throttle switch.
