If your current deck has pre-amp outputs, don't waste your money on replacing it. If it doesn't, it *may* be worthwhile to find an amp that has speaker-level inputs in addition to pre-amp inputs. Try it out, if it suits you then you've saved money; if not, you can still get a new head unit and wire it with pre-amps.
Get a good quality amp. Don't get whatever is biggest and shiniest. Look for RMS (continuous) power rating, THD (total harmonic distortion) and the signal to noise ratio. Crutchfield's website has good comparison abilities between products - too bad their prices are awful! Check online and wholesale sources - markups on car audio are unreal. I've been happy with the XPlod amp I bought - it's sounds better than the Pioneer Premier than preceded it. Make sure that your speakers can handle the amp as well - you want at least 30w RMS from your amp, and many speakers won't handle it, so check yours before you blow them up. :)
Seriously consider relocating speakers. 5.25" units fit easily in the doors and rear side panels, and are a pretty good size for bass. If you can afford separates, so much the better. If you can't, you'll probably need to invest in a sub for decent bass, as those little 4x10s don't do so well in their free-air environment, and with a non-sealing hatch, well, it just won't work. If not relocating, baffle the front speakers, as that will help too.
