The black crud was in the slave. It didn't go to the point of failure but it wasn't all that far away. I suspect that it was either from the rubber portion of that hose or bits of the seals from a previous master cylinder. I didn't replace the clutch hose yet - I'm waiting for a few months and I'll bleed it again to see if I get any more crumbles coming out with the brake fluid.
I have another thought on this ... has the master brake cylinder and/or brake fluid reservior ever been replaced? If it has, try poking a clean wire down the reservoir to the point where the hose to the clutch master comes out of the reservoir. Sometimes the plug on that nipple doesn't get clipped.
And yet another thought ... Since the clutch is moribund anyway, loosen the flare nut from the clutch hose to the slave and see if you get anything dribbling out of it when your son presses the clutch pedal.
