I'd check the codes, but suspect the AMM, alas...

Vince,
Your '88 900S is exhibiting exactly the same symptoms as my Mom's '90 900 base 3dr., both of which have the LH 2.4 Jetronic fuel injection system. Her idle does that at startup, but it goes away when warmed up, just 2-3 minutes later, usually.

I'd start looking for an AMM. Swap one out with a friend's 900, if the AMM part numbers match. Don't try to swap an aluminum body AMM in for yours, though, the wiring of the two AMM types are different.

I'd look at the fuel injection trouble codes, too. Swedish Wrench (http://www.swedishwrench.com/flashcode.htm) website has info on checking the trouble codes logged by your LH-Jetronic computer and having the "brain" flash the Check Engine light in code to tell you what has faults have occured. Townsend Imports website, link below, has a page on this, too. Your diagnostic connector, to which to plug in a switched jumper wire (homemade one is what I use, not the SAAB part) from connector to convenient ground and your ignition key are all that is needed to get your codes.

Also, you can do the AMM burn-off function test or "glow" test. Just undo the two clamps at the air filter elbow pipe-to-AMM junction, prop the AMM's undone end upon the air filter housing elbow, leave AMM plugged in electrically, start engine, rev to above 2,500 rpm, shut it off, hop out quickly (within 4 seconds), and look into AMM's open end. AMM's platinum sensor wire should glow orange/red (visible even in daylight) if wire is OK. This glow takes place four seconds after engine shut-off and lasts for only one second, so you have to exit the car quickly after shut-off, or use an assistant, or if you're blessed w/long arms just reach through open driver's door window (door shut) to cut off ignition.

If AMM wire glows, AMM can still be faulty, as is the case w/Mom's '90 900 currently. All glow means is that wire isn't broken. If no glow, try test again to be sure. If you're sure of no glow, AMM wire is either broken OR LH-Jet computer isn't performing burn-off function (not likely, but possible.)

Hope this helps!
